Novosibirsk is the third largest city in Russia after Moscow and St.-Petersburg. Novosibirsk has an area of 500 sq. km and a population of 1,500,000.

Akademgorodok (Academic City), known worldwide as a large scientific center, is located 30 km south of the center of the city. Akademgorodok is often compared with Silicon Valley. Akademgorodok houses 46 scientific institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS).

Novosibirsk State University

is one of the three leading Russian universities in Mathematics and Physics (the other two are Moscow State University and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology). Today NSU employs more than 5,000 researches, including 3,000 Candidates of Sciences, 800 Doctors of Sciences, 53 Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and 39 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Each NSU faculty is affiliated with a research institute (or its part).

Three Russian Academies of Sciences have their branches in Novosibirsk: Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, and Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Six international research institutes successfully work at the scientific center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Culture

Novosibirsk has a total of 8 professional theaters. The city has a rich musical life: the Novosibirsk Philharmonic employs 18 orchestras and smaller musical groups that regularly perform classical music in the city's numerous concert halls and theaters.

Novosibirsk houses 104 libraries with a collection of 6.8 million items. One thousand people can seat simultaneously in the reading rooms of the largest library in Siberia (State Public Scientific Technical Library).

Novosibirsk State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet occupies a building with two halls with a seating capacity of 1000 and 2000 and a 900 sq. m stage.

The unique ballet and opera companies incorporate laureates of prestigious international and Russian musical contests. The Novosibirsk ballet company is well-known not only in Russia but in many other countries. The Novosibirsk opera was an initiator of a global international opera festival named "Four Centuries of Opera." The first "Four Centuries of Opera. West-Siberia-East" festival under the support of UNESCO was in 1997.

Transportation

Novosibirsk is one of the most important transportation hubs in Russia, located at an intersection of the main routes connecting eastern regions with central, northern, and southern Russia. Inskaya, a freight terminal, is the second largest railway station in Russia. Novosibirsk has an international airport called Tolmachevo that serves more than 500 daily flights within Russia and abroad. Forms of transportation in Novosibirsk include the Metro (subway), trolleys, trams, buses, taxis, and automobiles. The Novosibirsk Metro serves more than 80 million passengers every year. Motor transportation is provided by more than 50 companies that possess the total of 1 million sq. m. of storage facilities.

Industry

More than 200 enterprises operate in Novosibirsk. Overall, there are more than 20000 various companies and 10000 trading firms in Novosibirsk.

Trade

Novosibirsk is a Siberian leader in retail and wholesale trade. The city is one of the three largest Russian trade centers in volume.

Finances

Being a financial center of Siberia, Novosibirsk houses 70 banks and more than 150 insurance and financial companies, the Stock Exchange and the Siberian Interbank Currency Exchange. Ninety banks from 33 cities are listed on the Siberian Interbank Currency Exchange.

Thus, Novosibirsk is a city with a highly developed infrastructure that favors successful business transactions in almost any sphere. Today more than 42 foreign companies from 17 countries have opened their offices in our city and 200 joint ventures are successfully operating in Novosibirsk.
